Dave Davidson’s Altars Of Fatness: Kuma’s Corner In Chicago

Chicago is always one of my favorite stops on tour. This is largely in part to the plethora of amazing food spread throughout the Windy City. Chicago is widely-known for it’s killer hot dogs ladened with neon green relish and for its gut-busting deep dish pies.However, there’s a burger joint in Chi-Town that takes precedence over both those aforementioned Chicago staples…and yes it’s heavy metal-themed.
Kuma’s Corner is a metalhead’s dream, if you’re looking to chow down on a serious burger while listening to some kick ass bands in the process. The burgers are so damned good here that the majority of the clientele aren’t even metalheads at all, just normal business types on their lunch break that have to be subjected to Death and Slayer while they eat, which I kinda get a kick out of.
The burgers at Kuma’s are all filling, mouthwatering and named after metal bands that are classic and obscure.
In a doomy kind of mood? Check out the YOB with smoked gouda, bacon and roasted red peppers. Feeling more like some classic thrash? Hit up the Megadeth topped with chorizo and red potato hash, tortilla strips and pico de gallo. Upon my last visit, I decided to check out the Absu and after my first bite I knew I had made the right choice.
The meat was juicy, cooked perfectly medium and was a hefty 10 ounces. The double combo of pepperjack and queso fresco satisfied my craving for cheese while the tomatillo salsa and red onion avocado relish lifted up the heaviness with some latin flavors. What put it over the top was the trio of deep fried chilies which added heat and a great crunch.
The pretzel roll bun was a nice touch that perfectly encapsulated all the ingredients. Also, let’s not forget about the hand cut fries with homemade ketchup, so much awesomeness on one plate. The burger was totally worth the $13 and I’m sure it would make Proscriptor proud.
You ABSU-lutely have to try it!
