Obliteration’s Sindre Solem: The Gun Shy Email Interview

Sindre Solem

So, here’s the deal: Most bands want to talk to you during the day and for a good stretch there, I was without actual employment — so I could do phone interviews. I was freelancing and as any writer will tell you, that work is hard to come by consistently. A big part of the reason why I started this blog was to keep my brain fresh and to just keep from going insane while I looked for work. Now, I’ve got a gig again, and with most bands seemingly resistant to night interviews, I’m fucked.

Hence, the email interview…this time, with Obliteration’s vocalist and guitarist Sindre. The band recently let us stream their album Nekropsalms, which is fucking regal and lethal; Obliteration recently teamed with Richmond, Virginia’s Forcefield Records for the vinyl re-release of the 2009 opus.

Now, we bring you Sindre Solem from Norwegian old-school death metal act Obliteration.

How’s the new album coming along? I understand you are writing new tunes. What will they sound like…if you can even give us an idea?
It’s coming along but it’s moving quite slow at the moment. The stuff we have so far is insanely cool, but we shit-canned loads of music ‘cause we didn’t think it was good enough to be on an Obliteration record. Arild (guitarist) and myself just finished the second Nekromantheon album, and Kristian is currently on tour with Aura Noir in the States, as he is their new live drummer. This obviously takes a lot of time, but hopefully we’ll get the writing back on track pretty soon.

I have several lyrics ready and I got the feel that we’ll go into a more intense writing period now that the Nekromantheon album is finished. It will sound like a darker version of our latest album, with more punk madness and black metal influences. Think Von meets Deathside meets Darkthrone meets early Voivod meets Talk is Poison meets Autopsy and Saint Vitus. Or something. I don’t know as most of the album isn’t finished, I have no idea how the rest will sound like…just guessing!

How did the Maryland Deathfest go last year?
It was the best show EVER! Fucking insane crowd and the general atmosphere was amazing. Didn’t know that so many were into Obliteration. We sold shitloads of merch and got to meet many awesome people, and saw so many great bands. Our whole U.S. tour last year was beyond anything we had done before; we would love to come back. The States were good to us. We’ll be back. In the meantime, check out our U.S. EXCLUSIVE Nekropsalms LP on forcefield records, and support their releases. Like Cannabis Corpse!

What band makes you most proud of your Norwegian roots?
Darkthrone I guess. And Burzum. I feel REALLY Norwegian while listening to Burzum. There are many great bands from Norway who I totally worship and am “proud” of. For example; Virus, Aura Noir, Diskord, Orcustus, Faustcoven, Audiopain, Infernö, Condor, Deathhammer, Black Magic, Okkultokrati, Turbonegro, Altaar, Lamented Souls, Repellent, Knuste Ruter, Lobotomized, Summon the Crows, Dishonarable Discharge, Isengard, Happy Dagger… The list goes on.

Who would win in a fight — Fantorangen or Max Mekker, and why?
Max Mekker since he has the ultimate pornstar name and since I have no idea who Fantorangen is! Ha Ha. Max Mekker was a total bad ass on Norwegian TV with his tools and all.

What will you be doing tour-wise for the foreseeable future?
We’re doing a few shows this summer and fall in Europe but all our focus from now on is dedicated to finishing our third album, which will kill for sure. It will be released as soon as possible with Indie Recordings here in Norway, and after that we’re gonna hit the road. Then, we wanna play everywhere. So we’ll come back to the States then for sure. If anyone wants to book us after our next album is out, let me know! We wanna tour as much as possible so we can skip “life” here in Norway.

What one band would you love to see return with an album and tour?
Autopsy!! Uh..,wait a minute, that actually happened Ha Ha. Then I wanna see the Beatles.

What scares you more than anything?
Drum triggers.

What name do you wish your parents had given you?
I’m perfectly happy with my name. Cause it means the son of Satan in ancient Norwegian. And I’m mentioned in Samson [Bruce Dickinson's first band]’s “Hammerhead track from their Head On LP. Great album by the way. “

Have you ever been arrested?
No, ’cause I’m a pretty skilled liar and all over a slick dude, so I get out of most situations without any hassle. But our first bass player/guitarist something back in 2001 when we first started out, Sebastian, he just did five to six weeks in a Thai prison for illegal work/scamming/embezzlement/something. He got deported back to Norway and I think he’s banned from ever entering Thailand again. Fucking A, that’s good work.

What’s the one thing you wish you could change about America?

The Republicans. And the metalcore trend. they’re equally shitty.

What is your stance on sex during menses — ‘if it bleeds, fuck it’ or ‘once the red tide subsides, surf’s up?’”

Surf’s up dude, killer waves and cranky babes! It’s best when you don’t know in advance though, so it’s a bloody surprise, instead of just a regular surprise. (This does not make sense what so ever).

What one record would you give to Satan?

Negative Plane’s Stained Glass Revelations, if he don’t have it already. It’s one of the best tributes to his work I’ve heard in ages. A weirdly perfect album. And Hexvessel’s Dawnbearer, as a bonus.

What word do you hate?

“Like.” I  FUCKING HATE when some Americans say “like” in almost every sentence. It sounds so stupid. We have an equivalent here in Norway: “Lissom.” It sucks so bad.

What turns you on?
Pretty girls with big round earrings and tight jeans, and 70′s styled shirts. Fuck yeah. And devotees to the cause, like Miss Jex Thoth.
