Tiger Flowers’ Jesse Madre: The Gun Shy Interview

Tiger Flowers

The other day, I called on all touring bands to help bring my dream to life, and Jesse Madre of Tiger Flowers said he’s on board. Like me, he’s always wanted to see a real-life glory hole (for me, as fabled as Loch Ness), and if he finds one, he promised to snap a picture and get “Glory Holes Across American” started.

“I look for one everywhere I go,” Madre tells Gun Shy Assassin. “I have yet to see one. And one time we were at this club…I think we were in Virginia. I thought I saw one, and I went and grabbed the guys — but it was just a hole in the wall, with a pipe behind it.”

Ah! Such a disappointment. I feel his pain. I, too, was once fooled. I was at a rest stop in UpState New York, and saw what I thought was a glory hole, but ended up being just a hole leftover from an old toilet paper dispenser.

“Outside of some weird porns, I have never seen an actual glory hole,” the singer for Tiger Flower tells me. “But I encourage anyone who knows where one’s at to hit us up on Facebook, and let us know. This is something we want to see.”

Tiger Flowers have a new self-titled EP coming out; we’re actually streaming a track from that effort, and you can hear that right here. The EP is monstrous — each song is a brutal crush of soul-fucking noise.

The EP will hold fans over until 2012, when the band will release a full-length, whether on a label or by themselves.

“We waited a long time to put out this EP, and that’s something, as a band, we’re never going to wait again, so if that means us releasing it, we’ll fucking do it,” Madre said.

In this day and age, such a move probably makes sense. Bands are self-releasing albums all the time. “I don’t know what makes sense any more,” Madre said. “With the internet, its just so much easier for people to get their shit out there. Sou look at some of these big acts, and all these dudes are just starting their own labels and putting out their own shit.”

Madre did bemoan the fact that it’s taken so long for the band to get new music out. “I feel like we missed striking the iron while it was hot,” he says. “But we’re going to move at our speed now, and if we keep touring and playing shows, good shit’s gonna happen. We’re just going to have to go out there and beat the streets, which we’re not afraid to do at all. We’re actually looking forward to it.”

Tiger Flowers will be playing some shows in September and November, and have more gigs coming up in February of 2012. I had to ask Madre if he ever gets pussy on the road.

“Never,” he admits. “I was just talking about this with a couple of guys I work with, right before we left for tour, and they were like, ‘Oh man — tail’s going to be everywhere.’ And I was like, ‘Guys, I have never gotten laid once on tour,’ and that might be partly me because when I’m out there, I enjoy the shit out of my buddies in the band and I’m too busy getting drunk and having a good time with them to try to single out some girl and spend 20 minutes lying to her about how I think she’s interesting and unique. So I don’t even bother.”

Madre actually works in a tattoo shop. The pervert I am, I had to ask about seeing girls’ tits and hey-nanoo-nanoos

“It’s never the girls you wanna see,” he says. “It’s the same thing piercing wise; it’s never the ones you want to see.”

Every come across some stank puss?

“Oh yeah dude — I wear masks. I don’t even take a chance any more. I learned my lesson about six years ago. I had to leave the room. I was, like, dry heaving and shit. People are animals man.”
