D.R.I. Guitarist Undergoes Colectomy

Posted by Chris Harris on January 30, 2012 in News, This Blows

D.R.I.

Jesus, this sucks.

I feel so bad for D.R.I. founding member and guitarist Spike Cassidy, who is in the hospital recovering from complications — including infection — that arose after he underwent total colectomy surgery.

Cassidy had his entire colon removed earlier this month; that’s fucking awful. No way to live.

Doctors have pinpointed the infection and he is expected to be released from the hospital within the next few days. Spike’s rehabilitation will likely have some effect on the band’s touring schedule in early 2012.

Uh, you think? Also, living with a colostomy bag doesn’t make you wanna travel much. Trust me.

Cassidy was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2004, and underwent surgery (a one-foot section of large intestine was removed through an eight-inch incision in his stomach in 2006), radiation and chemotherapy and is said to be winning the battle against the disease.

I’m sorry Spike went through all this, but get your head out of YOUR, ahem, waste opening. I’ve had an ostomy for 20 years. 2 years ago I went to Mt. Everest with some ither folks with ostomies; one of our bagmen summitted the mountain. Want to go rock climbing with me? Scuba diving? Sailing, bicycling, running? The bag isn’t going to hurt his musical chops or anything else.

I apologize for the comment. I have a relative with an ostomy and for them, travel is uncomfortable so I guess I was generalizing.
