In This Moment’s Howorth: Music As A Weapon Gig Moved Me “To Tears”

So, a press release went out Tuesday afternoon to try and renew interest in the band In This Moment, who’ll be touring in early 2011 with Korn, Disturbed, and Sevendust as part of the fifth Music As A Weapon tour. I’m sure the band never expected that their “comments” about landing the gig would lead other sites to run headlines about how Chris Howorth, the band’s guitarist, “cried” when he learned his band would be on the bill. That’s a bit of a stretch and led to obvious jokes like, “I’d cry too if I had to tour with Korn and Disturbed.” Dude, if you were in a band that had the chance to tour with Disturbed and potentially sell tons of merch, you would not be crying. That’s for starters. Secondly, let’s just get my biases out of the way right fucking now: I have met Chris a bunch of times, and he’s one of the nicest dudes you’ll ever meet. Sure, In This Moment is derivative and formulaic and a ton of things that have been said a thousand times before, but that’s why they landed the opening slot on a huge fucking tour like this.
Chris is a sincere dude. His words have been taken and turned into headline fodder, and sure, I get why other sites would do this, but I feel the word “cried” is rather strong and misleading. Chris says that “we were overwhelmed with emotion; [vocalist] Maria [Brink] and I were literally moved to tears.”
They were moved to tears. They teared up. They weren’t fucking crying. Crying is what you do when you’re at a funeral. Crying is what happens when some slut stomps on your heart. What happened here was simply the sort of thing that comes with happiness. A few tears. I’m sure they weren’t just sitting there, bawling their eyes out like two fat girls who didn’t get invited to prom.
The statement — which really wasn’t necessary, at all — continues on, with Chris quoted as saying, “our band has been constantly clawing our way up the ladder in this business and it’s very hard to get on a big tour like this. Getting this news is like getting the best Christmas present we could hope for.”
Because they’re going to sell a ton-fuck of merch. In This Moment is a pop metal band. Yes, pop metal. Just like Avenged Sevenfold and yes, Korn. In This Moment want to be rock stars, and I can not blame them. And now, I’m not a fan. But I do think it was unfair for some folks to exaggerate what was actually said.
