Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson: Why He’s My Hero

Dude? Who doesn’t look up (or in my case, down) to Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson?!? Not only does he sing in one of the greatest metal bands of all time, he looks like a friggin’ teenager; must be all that road-puss he gets. He’s a pilot to boot, and owns the crowd whenever the band performs live: He runs around that stage like heavy metal’s Jack LaLane, just losing his shit, waving the English flag, and he just never stops. He’s also not a sell-out, which has reaffirmed his status as my hero. He’s the man.
Today, I read that he turned down an offer to be on the judging panel of the U.K. version of the American hit television show “The Voice.” Finally, they’re taking one of our shows and not the other way around.
Dickinson was offered the job by the BBC, who want the show to rival “The X Factor” when it launches next year. But Bruce said: “That show sounds so crap and demeaning to everyone involved, I took great delight in turning the BBC down. ‘The X Factor’ is appalling enough, it’s no better than ‘Opportunity Knocks.’” I don’t get that joke.
Meanwhile, Behemoth’s Nergal has, in fact, signed on for the Polish version of the singing competition, which is not based on looks whatsoever…interesting concept.
Does that mean he’s a sellout?
