Metal From My ‘Hood: Katahdin
Posted by Chris Harris on January 4, 2011 in News, The Goat
OK, while technically not from my current ‘hood, Katahdin are from Connecticut, where I spent four years of my life as an unblinking, unflinching journalist, covering crime in Hartford’s crime-riddled, drug-addled neighborhoods. While I was there, I also covered New England’s metal scene, which at that time was just starting to take off.So, yes…while I no longer live in Connecticut, I still have an affinity for the Nutmeg State, and consider my time there life-changing, as it shaped who I am today and I met a lot of great people who I am still friends with today in Connecticut — including The Goat. And that brings me to Katahdin. These dudes contacted me by email and mentioned they were tight with The Goat, so I had to check them out — especially after The Goat told me they’re a mountain-style black metal three-piece obsessed with New England folklore. And the band’s sound is fucking vicious. I downloaded the band’s self-released full-length, and these dudes crush. I’m not much of a music reviewer, but I will tell you that Katahdin’s songs stirred deep within me the urge to kill an elk, place its head on top of mine, and defile virgins in the snow-blanketed wood.
Based out of Northern Connecticut, Katahdin is a band with many influences, but rather than focus on exhausted metal themes like Norse Mythology or Satanism, Katahdin is taking an approach closer to home — they’re interested in New England’s dark past, which they feel has been set aside and forgotten about for hundreds of years. “We intend to invoke the unrelenting gloom that once eclipsed this land through armor-piercing blasts, consistently-ruthless thrashing, and utterly-depressing tales of its past,” the band says in an email.
The band’s name, in fact, is a Native American word that means “something along the lines of the greatest mountain, or the highest place. It also happens to be the name of a mountain in Maine and there are some cool mythological creatures that were said to have inhabited it.”
Check these dudes out here: You may be pleasantly surprised by how much you dig ‘em.
