Name Of Next Opeth Album Is NOT Gun Shy Assassin

A mock-up for Opeth's 'Gun Shy Assassin' album

Because it’s a slow news day and there isn’t much happening, I figured I’d take a moment to dispel a rumor that started months ago on a few Opeth message boards — a rumor brought to our attention by regular reader Lydia. That rumor is that the new Opeth record, which the band is working on right now, will be called Gun Shy Assassin. But that’s not true.

Lydia wrote to us over the weekend that “there is an ongoing joke” — born out of early rumors — “that their next album is titled Gun Shy Assassin. A couple of us have made cover art, as well as an edited photo of Mikael.”

How did this happen? “It all arose from misinterpretation of a thread entitled ‘Opeth Will Start Tracking New LP Next Month – Gun Shy Assassin,’” reports Lydia; you can read the story that caused the confusion here. “Thought you might enjoy that. Thanks for the articles, man…they’re always a good read.”

Well, thank you Lydia. And to the people who created fake album art for Gun Shy Assassin…thanks. Some of them were awful, yet some were truly eye-catching. But, I would like to say, once and for all, that there is absolutely no truth to this rumor. Unless, of course, the Opeth dudes want to name their album Gun Shy Assassin — that would be sick, guys.

Like that will ever happen. A boy can dream, can’t he?

Well, we are flattered that this was even a rumor…for however brief. It means people are reading and that’s all we could ever ask for.
