Hour Of 13’s The Ritualist In Stores Now

Posted by Chris Harris on February 8, 2011 in New Records, The Goat

Hour of 13

Months and months ago, my buddy The Goat turned me on to Hour of 13‘s album The Ritualist. It has been on my iPod ever since and I routinely rock that shit at top volume while walking through Manhattan. It’s good walking music. You get to where you need to go fast.

Well, I just wanted to post a friendly reminder here at Gun Shy Assassin that Hour of 13‘s LP is now available for widespread consumption. The album has been reissued through Earache, and was released today. If you like doom metal, then you need to check these dudes out.

According to a press release, Hour of 13 “has built up a formidable reputation in underground circles with its potent brand of occult-inspired doom-laden metal.”

Crowbar Streaming New Disc Sever The Wicked Hand

Posted by Chris Harris on February 8, 2011 in New Records, News

Kirk Windstein of Crowbar

Today’s the day. Sever The Wicked Hand, the first Crowbar record since 2005’s Lifesblood for the Downtrodden, is in stores right now and take it from me kids, it is fucking furious and the kind of record that grabs you by the fucking neck and won’t let go for weeks.

Seriously. This thing has been dominating my iTunes as of late, because the musicianship is strong and Kirk Windstein’s vocals are at the same time punishing and soulful. This Crowbar album is the business.

But don’t take my word for it, jerkface. Go to AOL Music right now, and stream Sever the Wicked Hand in its entirety. That’s right, you can listen to the whole record before you buy it. The song “I Only Deal In Truth” won’t leave my head. So go listen to the record and come back and tell us what you think.

Gary Moore Died From A Heart Attack

Posted by Chris Harris on February 8, 2011 in News

Gary Moore

Didn’t I tell you to take yesterday’s report about Gary Moore choking on his own vomit with a grain of salt?

According to the more reliable but still no bastion of journalistic integrity, The Daily Mirror, influential Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore died of a suspected heart attack — this, according to the findings of an autopsy conducted over the weekend.

Moore died in his sleep Sunday morning, hours after the rocker checked into the five-star Kempinski Hotel in Estepona on the Costa del Sol, Spain. He was accompanied by an unnamed female friend, and was 58 years old at the time of his death.

Illness Strikes Both Rob Zombie, DevilDriver Camps

Posted by Chris Harris on February 7, 2011 in News

Rob Zombie

Stupid germs. It seems like lately, everybody’s been getting sick around me. It is that season, though. People are getting sick in droves, and some of them are coughing into their hands and spreading their sickness all over the place, making the rest of the immediate world miserable. And it seems germs — or bad sushi, maybe even a wicked hangover, we don’t really know — have stricken two rock acts: Rob Zombie and DevilDriver.

According to reports, Rob Zombie’s sold-out February 8, 2011, concert — which has been scheduled for some time, to take place at the Knitting Factory in Reno, Nevada — has been canceled, due to an unspecified illness. Tickets for the gig are refundable, at points of purchase. No word on whether it will be rescheduled, but it doesn’t seem likely.

Meanwhile, another unspecified illness has stricken DevilDriver’s drummer John Boecklin. According to the band, the dude has fallen ill.

Dillinger Escape Plan Frontman Working With Steve Evetts

Posted by Chris Harris on February 7, 2011 in In the Studio, News

Steve Evetts as shot by Greg Puciato

Back in October, Dillinger Escape Plan teased big things for 2011. Tours, mostly. Now, we know that the band will be hitting the road for much of this spring with the Deftones, which rules.

But October’s tease also insinuated there could be new music coming. Now, in a series of Twitter posts, Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato has revealed that he has been in the studio laying down vocals with producer Steve Evetts.

Of course, Evetts and Dillinger Escape Plan go way back, having worked with him on past efforts. But Greg did not mention where or when these vocal tracks might end up surfacing. Could be for a Dillinger record, could be for guest vocals mayhaps? Let’s just keep guessing, shall we? [Edit: GSA regular Cullen Simmons directed us to a Facebook post in which Greg confirms that the work he was doing with Evetts is Dillinger related.]

Dr. Acula Release New Album Trailer

Posted by Chris Harris on February 7, 2011 in New Records, Video

Dr. Acula

You can see that trailer at the end of this post. You know, I remember liking Dr. Acula’s album Below Me when it came out, and thought these dudes were really onto something. And they’re from Long Island, and I support bands from my native soil.

But in a press release, these dudes are being called “party-grind pioneers.” I thought they were deathcore but apparently, they’ve taken things in a different direction, and are a party metal band.

OK. Well, the band’s Victory Records debut, Slander, will be in stores everywhere February 15. For a preview of the entire album, head here.

Report Claims Gary Moore Choked On Own Vomit

Posted by Chris Harris on February 7, 2011 in News

Gary Moore

That’s fucking awful, dude. I just watched an episode of “Breaking Bad” the other day that showed some chick choking on her own vomit in her sleep. That’s just bloody awful, man. To think that such a legend of the guitar would’ve died like that makes me super bummed.

But that’s what the tabloid The Sun is claiming. Take this report with a grain of salt, because The Sun is very sketchy. Blabbermouth linked to the story, that claims Thin Lizzy legend Gary Moore choked on his own vomit after a long night of drinking champagne and brandy. He was discovered around 4 a.m. Sunday (February 6), unconscious, by his girlfriend inside their Spanish hotel room.

The couple were on vacation. The Sun claims medics found the 58-year-old axeman lying lifeless on his back, wearing just his underpants.
