Porcupine Tree Rock Out At Radio City Music Hall

I have seen Porcupine Tree a bunch of times before — usually in clubs — and they’ve never disappointed. So the idea of seeing them at Radio City Music Hall was too good to pass up. Not sure how this happened, but the Deftones / Alice In Chains / Mastodon tour came through town the same night. New York’s metal scene was torn, but seemingly, most opted for Madison Square Garden.See, I always knew Porcupine Tree appealed to a wider audience. My dad loves ‘em so I figured anyone who loves Pink Floyd and just prog rock in general would dig ‘em. And I was right. I haven’t been to a concert in a while where I felt like I was the youngest person there, but I felt that way Friday night. That’s because everyone my age was at MSG, and their parents were at RCMH.
The concert was amazing. I mean, Porcupine Tree are one of the best bands going right now, and one of the most underrated rock groups ever. I had an awesome time; the acoustics were stellar, the lights were epic, and they played a lot of their older stuff. Making the concert even better was the beautiful Jen, who accompanied me to the show and made the night all that better.
The band opened with an acoustic set, including “Stranger By The Minute,” “Futile,” and “Small Fish.” The band took a quick break, and came back with their instruments plugged in to amps. “Even Less” was followed by “Open Car,” “Lazarus,” and one of my favorite new songs, “I Drive The Hearse.” Then, they played “Bonnie The Cat,” with that X-rated robot video projected on the screen behind them.
Before the night was over, the band had the crowd bopping along to “Occam’s Razor,” “Great Expectations,” “Kneel and Disconnect,” “Drawing the Line,” “Time Flies,” “Sleep Together,” and “Up the Downstairs.”
The band came back out for an encore, playing “Arriving Somewhere But Not Here.” It was an awesome show in an awesome venue, and I must say it was rad seeing how far this band’s fan-base has expanded. And Steven Wilson looked like he was having a great time.
