The Zenfone 2 flagship smartphone from Asus has already been launched in March (Taiwan) and it’s available in two versions, including the ZE 550 ML and the ZE 551 ML. When it comes to the ZE 551 ML model, it has 4GB of RAM and a very nice and sharp looking FHD display. On the other hand, the ZE 550 ML has only 2GB of RAM and a gorgeous looking 720p screen.
Both of these models are arguably quite powerful for the price (which we’ll discuss very soon) and are definitely going to be a great buy, since they provide excellent performance for a relatively low cost.
The Zenfone 2 ZE 551 ML model will run on a fast 2.3 GHz quad core CPU, namely the Intel Atom Z3580, while the 2GB version will have an Intel Atom Z3560 CPU clocked at 1.8 GHz. These are the main the greatest difference between the two models and all other features are exactly the same. Both of them also feature support for 4G networks and come with a dual SIM slot.
There isn’t much to talk about in terms of design changes since the new Zenfone shares many similarities with the first generation. It has the same curved back, brushed metal finish and 3.99 millimeter thickness that made the first Zenfone such a huge success. For those whom this may be an important factor concerning whether they’ll get this model or not, the navigation keys are not on-screen, but are actually capacitive.
Asus decided to take a different route when it comes to the Home button for the Zenfone 2 and on this model it is located at the top. Since this is a fairly large phone, some people may find accessing it is a bit difficult. Also, in order to make sure the sides are kept as thin as possible, the volume controls have been pushed to the back. The phone also comes with a 13 Megapixel Pixelmaster camera and a dual LED flash for better night pictures.
There aren’t too many features the Zenfone 2 can tout, but the ones included with it are quite useful. For instance, there is now a Kids mode, SnapView (a great way to secure files, photographs and applications, but also keep business and personal stuff separate) and Zenmotion (a great way to switch between single and two handed use).
Price and Availability
While it was initially reported the phone will make it to the market in March 2015, it’s going to take up to 2 months for all target markets to get their Zenfone 2 supply. The luckiest market will obviously be Taiwan, where people can already order some of the many versions of the phone. After the phone was officially launched in Taiwan, Asus has also announced the pricing for various other models. They range from 160 USD for the ZE500CL and up to 285 USD for the ZE551ML model.
The Asus Zenfone 2 is a very powerful and accessible phone price wise and it’s certainly going to cater to the casual smartphone enthusiast that needs a phone with great specifications at a good price. Hopefully those of you reading this are lucky enough to be able to order the phone from your country.
