Behemoth frontman Adam “Nergal” Darski (and I still can not believe I am about to type this) has late stage leukemia; he’s just 33 years old. On Wednesday, I turned 34. Fuck, man. This is so sad and frightening. The only good news is, Nergal is getting through it somehow.
According to a Twitter update from Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe, Nergal has finished the first round of chemotherapy and is “in great spirits.” Blythe claims to have spoken with Nergal over the phone Wednesday night, and says he’s “just recovering” and urged everyone to keep “positive thoughts.” Gun Shy Assassin seconds that motion.
Nergal needs a life-saving bone marrow transplant to battle the disease, and has used his diagnosis to shed light on the dire need for bone marrow donors. Every year, more than 10,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with leukemia or lymphoma, and a bone-marrow transplant from an unrelated person is their best or only hope for survival. There is no data available on how many people die waiting for a match, but only four out of 10 patients receive the needed transplant. To learn more about donating, head to Marrow.org.
