In 2005, when the Ozzfest lineup was announced, there was a band among the list of well-known metallers that stood out, if only because no one had heard of and them before, and they were now, somehow, going to be playing one of metal’s biggest stages. That band was Wicked Wisdom, and 2005 was the year we learned any band can be on Ozzfest so long as they can fork over the buy-on fee.
Yesterday, when set times were revealed for this year’s Ozzfest, there was another unfamiliar name: California Wildebeest. My first thought was, “Who the fuck are these guys?” I went to their Web site, and they sound like a hot adult contemporary outfit. At least having Wicked Wisdom on the bill made some sense, seeing as they were aggro. But this is much different.
I wasn’t the only one wondering about this band. As The Gauntlet learned, “a quick check of their MySpace page reveals very little about the band. They have few friends, and not many people visit them.” They have played very few shows too, which is odd “for a band that is about to be on one of the biggest stages this weekend.”
They’re unsigned and they’re playing AFTER Skeletonwitch and Kataklysm, and right before Goatwhore. They sound nothing like the other bands on the fest, so I guess they were able to drum up the buy-on fee, too.
Well, it turns out that the band’s guitarist is Mike Fleiss, the creator of The Bachelor. He’s also producing an upcoming Black Sabbath horror series so maybe that’s how this band got on Ozzfest. I, for one, plan on egging California Wildebeest.
