Canada Wants To Dissuade Bands From Playing There

“Oh Canada/ Don’t be so fucking lame”

This is beyond fucked up, and good lookin’ out to Sean Harris for picking up on this yesterday. My bad not posting about it until now.

So, according to this online petition, an additional $275 has been tacked on by the Canadian Government to the application for international artists looking to enter and perform within the country’s borders.

This additional $275 fee — applications previously were a one-time fee of $150, and now total $425 per band member — is required to be paid by talent buyers in Canada when aiming to host an international touring artist.

This, the petition says, will inevitably cripple small music venues and small business talent buyers.

The Calgary Herald claims “the new rules, which quietly came into effect July 31, will double, triple or even quadruple the cost of bringing in international artists to perform in bars, restaurants or coffee shops…”

Considering its tough already for bands to pass customs and even make it into Canada, this added fee will not help get tours interested in booking shows up north.

Sign the petition. For sanity’s sake.

Even Randy Blythe of Lamb of God thinks you should.

“For some insane reason the Canadian government has decided to enact absolutely ridiculous fees for foreign touring acts to enter their country,” he writes. “To tell you the truth, this will not affect a band the size of lamb of god that much- promoters make enough money off of us to figure this expense into the cost of bringing us to Canada- we do very well there, & fill every venue we play.

“But for smaller acts who wish to tour Canada, those just getting their start, this will make it absolutely impossible- smaller booking agents can’t afford $425 per band member per show to bring in acts from outside Canada.”

Adds Blythe: “I have absolutely no idea why they would do this, since touring bands already have to pay taxes out the wazoo in Canada anyway. Now they will not be able to come, the venues lose money, the fans don’t get to see shows, the businesses around the venues lose money, the government will get NO TAX instead of their normal cut from touring artists, & most important the music & arts scene suffers. WTF? It makes zero sense.”
