You may recall that last week, members of the Satanic Temple staged a same-sex celebration (or a “pink mass”) over the grave of the mother of Fred Phelps, the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church.
Well, now it seems authorities are looking to bring formal charges against the participants.
The owner of the cemetery where the pink mass took place, Bill Arlinghaus, wants to press charges and police in Meridian, Mississippi, are building a case against the folks involved in the ritualistic happening.
The Gauntlet claims Meridian Police Department Capt. Dean Harper claims the charges being considered are trespassing, indecent exposure and malicious mischief.
The indecent exposure charge, it seems, stems from Satanic Temple spokesperson Lucien Greaves’ intentional tea-bagging of Phelps’ momma’s grave.
The problem for police? The members of the temple live in New York City, which would make it hard to execute an arrest.
“I think the police captain is trying to allay the fears of the local people,” Greaves told Huffington Post, adding his group has “no ill will at all” toward the people of Meridian and “regret[s] if they caused them any consternation.”
The group held the pink mass as a show of support for legal equality of same-sex couples.
