The rumor that’s been floating around the last couple of weeks is that Marco Minnemann — known for his work with Kreator, Ephel Duath, and Necrophagist — has been tapped as Dream Theater’s newest drummer, replacing Mike Portnoy, who bailed several months ago only to crawl back to the band, who weren’t about to hear it.
While nothing has been confirmed, this Minnemann rumor’s been going strong for a spell now. In a recent online posting, guitarist John Petrucci said “Auditions went great and we do have someone but we are spending some time getting everything in order before making an official announcement. Let me just say that we are all incredibly excited about our choice and just bursting at the seams to let the world know!”
Minnemann is a German who lives in San Diego, and is considered a world class metal drummer, with an unusual drum kit setup that features an assortment of multiple foot pedals, gong drum, electronics and unique cymbal configurations.
Minnemann has released a book, “Extreme Interdependence,” which is drum instructional book that was selected as one of the best educational books in several drumming magazines.
This rumor is going to end up being true, folks, because I heard it some time ago, and now Blabbermouth is reporting it. That means that shit is true. I’m sorry, but you Portnoy fans out there are just going to have to accept the fact that Mike is not coming back. Frankly, I’m interested in hearing what Marco will bring to Dream Theater. I think he might be able to influence Dream Theater’s sound in a really heavy way, which could be insane.
