You know, sometimes I wonder, “What is it all for? Why am I doing this blog?”
I ask myself this sometimes because, we’re coming up on our two-year anniversary, and it seems like, for the most part, corporate metal is winning out. In a genre that supposedly supportive of the “independent spirit” and champions the little guy, it amazes me how many labels just kowtow to the big money metal sites. It disgusts me actually.
I’m getting to Gaza.
So, here’s the deal: When I am not eating, sleeping, fucking, or occupied by the responsibilities of the day job that pays for my meager existence, I am working on this site…much to the chagrin of my girlfriend.
Why do I do it? Because I like having an outlet to get shit off my chest. Also, because I have a legion of loyal readers now, and would hate to pull a Cosmo and have to back out. But this shit’s a struggle, folks.
Sometimes, I feel like Gaza. Being an independent metal site, I’m literally the underground band who’s been around for a while but still relegated to the confines of a van. Why? Because I don’t compromise my beliefs for the mighty dollar…unless you count lightening up on the semi-nude chick pics compromising, which, I admit, it sort of was.
But I didn’t just bow to advertisers’ complaints. I have a partner, who also felt it was too much with the chick pics, and label folks were also telling me they thought it was lame. That is the one time I have compromised, for anyone. I have lost more advertisers than I’d like to admit, based purely on content.
Anyways, the point is, I hate playing this fucking game, this balancing act of ass-kissing and side-stepping. Gaza don’t compromise. They keep it real.
On July 31, Black Market Activities will deliver the band’s long-awaited new album No Absolutes In Human Suffering; we told you that was the album’s title fucking ten years ago, homes.
