Guest Column: Three Bands You May Not Know About But Should By Abstracter’s Mattia Alagna

Guest Column

You folks seemed to enjoy our last series of guest columns on five life-changing albums so much, we decided to reach out to our various friends in the metal world, asking that they write columns on a new topic.

That topic? Three Bands You May Not Know About But Should, with a brief description of what makes each band worthy of your attention. Today, we continue with this ongoing series and an entry written by Abstracter‘s Mattia Alagna.

Viscera///
This is a three piece band haling from northern Italy which is a beast all in it’s own. Led by guitarist-vocalist Michele Basso, Viscera/// started out as a brutal death-grind band and then started to expand their sound by adding space rock and post-rock elements to the mix creating a mesmerizing and very intelligent post-metal formula made up sludgy, spaced out guitars, screamed and tortured vocals and blasting double bass. Their best effort to date is their first of only two albums they released, Cyclops, sounding like a blend of Carcass, Neurosis, and Subarachnoid Space. Amazing stuff!

Souvenir’s Young America
These guys from Richmond, VA are incredible. Great space rock – whatever metal – Americana roots music outfit. This trio is completely at ease both pounding your skull into dust with monstrous doom riffs and lulling you into oblivion with a simple harmonica and banjo line. Seriously, weirdest post-whatever heavy rock you will ever hear. Sleep – meets Swans – meets Woven Hand meets Neil Young. Simply to die for. Check out their album An Ocean Without Water if you are really looking to be surprised.

Dyskinesia
Incredible noise – shoegaze – psych-metal band again from my homeland of (nothern) Italy. This mostly instrumental outfit delivers a washing, corrosive and punishing sonic scraping to the synapses. The band is incredible in it’s sonic accomplishment of controlling and convening noise into streams and currents of mesmerizing and crushing beauty while at the same time keeping things simple and focused by delivering everything in a very direct and concise post-punk style. Their latest album Dalla Nascita is their most accomplished work thus far.
