By now, you should know the drill. We’ve been having musicians from across metal’s grand spectrum pen brief guest columns for us on a number of engaging topics: must-read books, must-see films, and bands you may not know but absolutely should.
Today’s column comes from Gomorrah’s Colton Deem.
Everyone should listen to Metallica, Pantera, and Death. Great bands but not the three bands I will mention.
First off, originating from Helsingborg, Sweden, hails one of my favorites and one of the most criminally-underrated bands in metal today: Darkane.
Releasing their first album, Rusted Angel, in 1999, Darkane blend the best of old school and modern thrash metal with melodic death metal and pile it generously between two thick slices of creativity and originality. Creating one stinky, fat, and juicy riff sandwich that gets better with every bite. Haven’t been able to see them unfortunately, but hopefully, that will change soon. For now, I will continue to pulverize myself to their albums.
Sylosis. An amazing and young thrash metal band from the U.K. Having released three albums since releasing their debut in 2008, they’ve shown nothing but dedication and commitment to topping each album and show they play.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen Sylosis live three times. Each time being better than the last. I very much look forward to their future material and have no doubt that these guys can, and may very well will, become one of the most popular metal bands in underground metal.
Of course I’ve gotta rep some home soil tunage. If you’re a fan of hellacious, evil riffs than Dismemberment, metal from Laurelville, Ohio, is definitely for you.
Blackened death thrash for all you sub genre goons out there. First time I heard these guys was a few months back. We got put on a bill together, the only thing I knew was that they had taken a day out of their tour with the mighty Skeletonwitch to rock with some local acts and they kicked major ass. Awesome guys, awesome tunes.
I have no doubts that these guys will go far. They recently released their debut full length album, Embrace The Dark (hear an exclusive tune from that disc here), and it is mighty tasty. I say you give them a listen and if you like what you hear, share their music with your friends. Spread the metal like a virus.
