Guest Column: Three Bands You May Not Know But Should By Mortor and Accursed Spawn’s Jay Cross

Guest Column

We’ve reached out to our metal brethren across the land, asking that they contribute prose to our recent series of guest columns. We ran a recent series on Five Albums That Will Change You, and the response was overwhelming.

The new topic is Three Bands You May Not Know About But Should, and we asked that each guest writer jot down a brief description of what makes each band worthy of our attention. Today, we continue this ongoing series with an entry from Jay Cross of Mortor and Accursed Spawn.

As a few of you may know, when I’m not beating skins, I’m blabbing into a microphone for Hammer Smashed Radio. Why does that matter? Well, I’m here to tell you about three bands you may not know about, but should. So, in no particular order, here you go:

Deamon
Deamon are one of Ottawa’s longest (still active) running death metal bands, started around ’97, and are about as brutal as it gets. Their 2006 album ‘Descend Dethrone’ is without a question a classic in Canadian death metal, and even features Topon Das of Fuck the Facts fame on bass.

They have a new record coming out in the next short while which I’ve had the privilege of hearing, and I can say with no restraints that this will be yet another masterpiece in the punishing discography that makes up the band. If you like blast beats, massive solos, guttural vocals, and pummelling bass lines, this is a band for you.

First Fragment
Hailing from the mecca of Canadian extreme metal that is Quebec, First Fragment are one of those gems that you never forget. They tear out death metal in the veins of Spawn of Possession, Origin, Gorgasm, Necrophagist, and (insert tech death band here), but they do it with their own flavor, while also mixing in catchy riffs and fist-pumping solos.

To date, the band has only released one record, 2010′s The Afterthought Ecstasy, however I hear they’re hard at work on their first full-length (which can’t be too far off I imagine). As a side note, the bands drummer Philippe Boucher recently joined Montreal heavyweights Beyond Creation, so… yeah… they’re of THAT calibre.

Signs of Chaos
If you’re looking at my list so far and thinking to yourself “damnit does this guy listen to anything that doesn’t have blast beats?” well, the answer is SOMETIMES. And a good chunk of when that happens, it’s cause I’m listening to my bro’s in Signs of Chaos. Like Deamon, SoC hail from Ottawa, however that’s about the only thing they have in common. These dudes shred out tunes that sound like a meld between Nevermore, Arch Enemy and Dethklok, however they do it with their own unique spin, and their own musical genius.

To date, the dudes have one demo and one EP (Rise) released, both of which will get your head banging in no time. Catchy riffs, Gene Hoglan-esque drums, and solos that will melt your face off makes this band a group that EVERY metalhead should be aware of. They’re one of those unique bands that you could show your kvlt friend, and girlfriend to all at the same time without the fear of either being cast out as a poser, or not getting laid.
