By now, you should know the drill. We’ve been having musicians from across metal’s grand spectrum pen brief guest columns for us on a number of engaging topics: must-read books, must-see films, and bands you may not know but absolutely should.
Today’s column was written by Nikos Mixas, guitarist for Phoenix-based stoner sludge act Twingiant, whose album Devil Down is in stores now.
Chiefs used to be based out of Phoenix, but moved to San Diego a couple of years ago. They’ve had a few line-up changes but the formula has stayed the same.
Simple hook-laden stoner rock with vocals you want to sing along to. They recently put out a split 7-inch on Battleground Records with Fuzz Evil and they’re in the studio currently recording another full-length.
Kiss the Red Alarm
I’ll start by saying, never judge a band by its name. When I listen to KTRA, I’m taken back to the mid 80’s when MTV played videos from bands that played real music.
They’re a mix of a bunch of those first wave of alternative bands. I love heavy music but this band is heavy in their own right. Just give them a listen.
Death metal still thrives in Phoenix and this is one of many that are representing the genre well in this desert wasteland.
All the dudes are musicians, there is not a weak link. I caught them recently and they ended their set with a 10 minute instrumental that left my jaw on the beer soaked floor.
They’re recording their 2nd full-length currently and it’s bound to be on there. I can’t wait.
