Gypsyhawk: Exclusive Tour Diary, Part One — March Out Of Winter

The Gypsyhawk crew

Gypsyhawk are currently on the road with Mothership, and lucky for us, the Metal Blade band’s been kind enough to extend an offer to the site. That offer? They asked that we run their tour blog — an opportunity we literally jumped at. Today, we bring you the first installment, written by guitarist Andrew Packer. If you like feel-good metal with tons of guitar worship, you need to check these guys out. You won’t help but get down to their lusty sounds. Read on.

We’re driving through New Boston, Texas, at the moment. I’ve been to Boston before and I can tell you there’s nothing novel about this town.

It looks like every other dilapidated Texan town you find about every 90 miles that was built up around a single gas pump. But, of course, Subway managed to weasel their way in.

I bet being a location scout for that company is one of those work release jobs for felons. And being behind the counter there is what happens when you don’t pay your taxes. Wesley Snipes is asking some trucker outside Midland right now whether or not he wants it “toasted.”

Last night, we played Texarkana, which, depending on whom you ask, is either in Texas or Arkansas. It was a mellowed night for most of us because the whole week before we were in Austin for SXSW.

Hard pills to swallow and a taste of our own medicine made up the bulk of our diets. Beer and whiskey washed it all down. But I think my friend Kirby got me to eat half a chicken fried steak at 4 a.m. one night. I’ll have to check my receipts.

Our bros from other hos, Mothership, who are our tour mates on this March Out of Winter trek, spent most of the week of SX back in their hometown of Dallas. When they showed up again in Shreveport, they were ready to catch up.

They had a case of apple pie moonshine and weren’t going to stop the crapulance until 7 in the morning. Gypsyhawk were all tucked in by 2.

I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to party less in my life. So the last two days have been about recharging my batteries, untangling my hair, eating other halves of fried steaks, and mostly sticking to beer. Obviously, I’ll still drink free whiskey.

So, like I said, Mothership is on tour with us. It’s their first time out so we’re very proud to be showing them the road.

Their family consists of brothers Kyle and Kelley Juet on bass and guitar, respectively; Judge on the drums; and Tasty, a.k.a. Cam Ron G, on tour management, bitch slapping, and free styling.

There’s video of him and I battling and he’s definitely Eminem. I’m that half-wit from YouTube that “deed eet” and thinks you look like “Rosie O’Donnell at a bisexual wedding shower.”

We’re heading to Tulsa right now. We hear there’s a blizzard lurking around the city. So much for marching out of winter. Looks like the bitch is back.

I’ll keep you posted.
