There are a bunch of good bands out there that have gotten lazy or bored or busy and haven’t put out a record for a while. It sucks, but maybe bitching about it on this here metal blog will rattle some cages and we’ll get more sweet, sweet metal.
I’m not a huge fan of folk metal, but when the itch to listen to traditional folk music layered over heavy riffage and slamming drums, you just have to scratch it. My go-to album is Kurbads, by Skyforger.
Guess when it was released? 2010. Have these versatile Latvians released anything since? No. Hurry up, fellas. Get some balls rolling.
We need some more songs about your country’s mythology. I need something to drink kvass to. And there are very few bands out there that can have bagpipes incorporated into a metal sound and pull it off.
If you want to check out the stories that inspire Skyforger, head to the vocalist’s blog.
He’s obviously intelligent and his English is very good. On his blog there’s excellent dissections of all the mythology and history of the Baltic peoples that put creative fire in the bellies of himself and his bandmates. There’s a lot on the blog, so maybe start reading it and by the time you finish a new album will be out.
