I happen to think Kerry King is a stand-up dude. I have interviewed him a bunch of times, and he’s always been cool to me and honest. I appreciate that in a person. Coolness and honesty. But I am guessing the dude is not down with guys like Devin Townsend.
Why? Well, during a recent interview with Christina Rowatt of Soundwave TV, King explained that Slayer would never do a rock opera and would not work with an orchestra.
“I think when you play with an orchestra, you’re just masturbating yourself, and saying, ‘We’re king of the world. Let’s go play with an orchestra,’” says King. “Sorry, Metallica, but, unfortunately, you did that. There’s so many bands that do it just… It’s just masturbation, man. It was good before that.”
So, I am guessing that King wouldn’t approve of Devin’s recent work with an orchestra in Prague for his upcoming Deconstruction LP. Just an assumption on my part. Kerry may love Devin’s work, but something tells me he’s too surly to appreciate Devin’s ridiculousness.
Kerry was also asked if there were a Big Five of Thrash, would Exodus be the fifth band. A lot of people think Exodus gets largely overlooked in this whole Big Four hubbub.
“That’s hard to say, ’cause you’ve got Testament. A little less history, you’ve got Machine Head, who are just gigantic. I mean, I wouldn’t call ourselves the ‘Big Four’ now. I think [the term ‘Big Four’] is dated, because at the time we were the ‘Big Four,’ and now to say it… It’s like, ‘Well, what about these other bands?’ And I’m like, ‘I didn’t make this up. I’m just part of it.’”
