While I think Mastodon’s recent releases have left something to be desired, I will always listen to new Mastodon music because…well, fuck — they’re Mastodon.
They did, after all, release Leviathan. They’ll always be relevant if only because of that.
Some dude from Examiner.com caught up with Mastodon’s Bill Kelliher during a stop on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.
“Before we left for the European tour, which was prior to this, we got into a studio with a producer,” Bill explains.
“We started just putting ideas down on tape, so to speak. We have about 25 to 30 songs that are ready for the new record.”
Uh, that’s a lot of songs. Let’s hope they make it a double LP.
Oh wait…I hoped too soon.
“We’re obviously not gonna use all 30 of them, but we’re in a much better place than we’ve ever been as far as being prepared during pre-production for an album. We’d like to get the record finished by the end of the year and have it out as soon as Christmas and all the holidays are over with — maybe, like, March or April, it would be great to have the new record out and then do a brand new tour on some new music.”
That would be phat.
Mastodon are pretty insane live, too — another reason why I will always respect them. I just don’t think they’re Satan’s gift to metal, is all.
