Last week, when I wrote that long-ass post about shutting the site down this May, I mentioned the fact that, through GSA, I have essentially burned dozens of bridges that will never be rebuilt.
Two of those bridges involve Mastodon. Years ago, when I was at MTV News, Mastodon were invited to perform at the VMAs in Las Vegas with the Foo Fighters. After the VMAs, and after the parties that accompany such an event, Brent Hinds of Mastodon was involved in some sort of altercation with some rapper dude who was there with System of a Down’s Shavo Odadjian.
Brent was essentially hospitalized following the attack, and an eye witness tipped me off to what happened — that a topless Hinds was using his wet T-shirt to snap Shavo.
He was also acting aggressively, my source had said, pushing and playfully punching Shavo and the rapper guy.
Eventually, rapper dude had had enough, and popped Brent square in the head. The blow knocked Hinds back, and he slammed his head on the concrete, which caused brain hemorrhaging.
My digging around on that story (and doing my fucking job) set fire to one bridge — the one to Mastodon’s management team. The second bridge — with the band’s publicist — was set ablaze after the release of Crack the Skye, an album I was extremely critical of.
Needless to say, I won’t be interviewing Mastodon anytime between now and my death. That’s fine. Like I said, I have regrets.
I say all of this to preface the following fact: Brent Hinds was allegedly booted from the Grammy awards Sunday evening.
Brent’s compadre in Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, Dillinger Escape Plan’s Ben Weinman, wrote online that Hinds was “kicked out of the awards show ‘cause he [poured] his bag all over the floor and undies and money and weed spilled everywhere and he wouldn’t pick it up.”
Ben says someone came up and told Hinds, “Sir you have to leave.” Hinds asked why and was told, “because you don’t know how to behave.”
Listen, I dig a lot of this man’s music, but he really goes above and beyond to be an asshole sometimes. I mean, the post-VMAs incident speaks volumes about the kind of dude Brent is.
He’s a rock star who doesn’t have any decorum.
I thought the fact that two of Mastodon’s members (Hinds, included) dressed so outlandishly for the Grammys was a win on many levels, and a statement on the awards in general. Wearing something outrageous to an awards show is one thing, but you don’t have to up the ante by acting like a disrespectful clown.
Brent, you’re an awesome musician. Just calm down with the attention-grabbing behavior. It’s off-putting.
