Metallica Sales Hurt By Spotify

There’s goes that argument that Spotify helps people discover new music they’ll end up buying.

If you haven’t discovered Metallica yet, you’re 4 and using daddy’s iPad again.

According to this story, sales of Metallica’s studio albums have been negatively impacted by the band’s decision to add its catalog to the streaming service Spotify on December 6.

Nielsen SoundScan claims data indicates that for four-week periods leading up to Christmas from 2008 to 2012, Metallica sales were 15% below expectations the week the titles were added to Spotify and 35% below expectations the following week.

The band’s sales had jumped 60% to 61% in the four-week period leading up to Christmas in both 2010 and 2011. In 2012 that four-week increase was just 27.2%.

Oh no!

Metallica is making less money! What the fuck. This can’t happen. Lars has drum lessons that aren’t going to pay for themselves.
