Literally and figuratively. Of course, Mike — who is in a little band called Dream Theater — played the drum tracks Avenged Sevenfold had demoed with Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan before he died of a drug overdose back in December and is touring with the band the next couple of months as part of Uproar. But he also apparently channels two dead drummer you’ve definitely heard of.
He spoke with Steven Rosen of Ultimate-Guitar.com (because Mike is, you know, a drummer) and was asked if he’s ever met Ringo.
“I have met Ringo. We did several shows with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant back in the ‘90s and I’ve met Jimmy Page many times since then. And then also Roger Waters and Nick Mason; I’m also a huge Pink Floyd fan. They were a big one for me as well.”
Then, he was asked about playing with Avenged and Dream Theater.
“Anytime I’m behind the kit, I’m feeling the sum of all the parts of who make me who I am. And no matter who I’m playing with, it triggers memories of music and other drummers to me. I am the biggest music fan you’ll ever meet and everything I do resonates with the music I grew up with. … And anytime I’m playing drums, I always feel the ghost of Keith Moon and John Bonham in everything I do.”
Hmm. I don’t even know what to make of this. Any thoughts? A little over the top, no?
