Former Dream Theater and Avenged Sevenfold dummer Mike Portnoy has yet another band to keep him busy. In addition to Adrenaline Mob, Mike has now teamed up with Whitesnake guitarist and vocalist John Sykes, who is also known for his work with Thin Lizzy.
The band also features an as-yet-undisclosed bassist, and the unnamed project is said to have demoed 12 songs so far for a new album at a Los Angeles studio.
Portnoy characterized one track as “copping the Zeppelin/Sabbath vibe,” with another coming across like “Floyd meets Purple.” I love dudes who only say the last part of a band’s name, like they’re on speaking terms. Does anyone ever refer to Dream Theater as Theater? I wonder.
On his site, Portnoy claims the band is “a completely ridiculous modern-day power trio” and called it “a new ‘real band’ for me,” much like Adrenaline Mob is.
“I will divide my time as best as I can between the two (hey, if Corey Taylor and Jim Root, Mike Patton, Joe Satriani and Chad Smith, Zakk Wylde all can do it, so can I!),” says Portnoy. “And I am equally excited by both… as they are both amazing new bands, but VERY different worlds musically… so there’s really no clash creatively. Timing-wise, Adrenaline Mob is happening NOW, and my band with Sykes won’t be released [until] later next year, so they’ll be able to co-exist just fine!”
