As many of you know, I am a huge fan of both Opeth and Porcupine Tree. And yes, I’m seriously psyched for Storm Corrosion, the debut album from Opeth frontman Mikael Akerfeldt and Porcupine Tree’s Steve Wilson’s awesome new side project, which remains unnamed. In fact, if you said I could listen to that album now or have sex with the chick to the right, I would listen to the album. Seriously.
Originally, the project was said to include Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy, but now — as I’d suspected — the dude’s out of the fold.
“I got together recently with Steven at his house, and we wrote a new tune straight away,” explains Akerfeldt in a new interview. “Of course, with the two of us involved it was 10 minutes long. And it came out so well that we started working on a second one as well.”
As for Portnoy’s involvement, Akerfeldt said the drummer just wasn’t needed anymore.
“To be honest, there’s just no room for drums on what we’ve done so far. I called Mike up, and he was cool about it. He’s got so much going on anyway, and I’m sure we will work together in the future.”
Storm Corrosion drops sometime next year. Vague, but I’ll take it.
