PitCam.TV caught up with Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt at this year’s Wacken Open Air festival two weeks ago, and dude says new material is in the works.
“I’ve been writing a little,” says Mikael. “I’m going on a trip soon — next week — on my own, actually, which I’ve never done before. I’m gonna bring the guitar and write some stuff, hopefully.”
That sounds rad. I wish I could go on a trip with Åkerfeldt. We could camp in the woods, and he could play me his mandolin all night and I could tell him what riffs worked, which didn’t. I could help shape the new Opeth record.
Mikael, you need to take me with you. I can help.
“I think we’re still touring, and we still have another European tour coming up in the fall. And that kind of prevents me from getting too into the work — the creative process. I’m gonna start writing more for real once we finish the tour. ‘Cause I don’t have much.”
I hope the next Opeth album kicks a little more ass than Heritage. Don’t get me wrong — I liked Heritage, but…I like my Opeth with a little more balls, and a little less old man prog experimentation.
