Scientists Say Moshpits Like Gas

Nope. The behavior of crowds at heavy metal concerts and the resulting disorder that is moshing is similar in speed distribution. Or something

Using particle image velicometry techniques to measure the collective motion of moshers, scientists discovered this mean moshpit has speed distribution that closely matches that of molecules in a 2D gas at equilibrium.

Exactly. It’s science.

Why does an inherently non-equilibrium system exhibit equilibrium characteristics? Scientists wanted to know, so they simulated the behavior using a standard flocking simulation software in which they could vary parameters such as self-propulsion and flocking behavior.

Or something.

They found they could easily reproduce the actually behavior of moshers when the self-propulsion and flocking parameters were dominated by noise. Interesting. I think.
