I’d never heard of Rhythm magazine before this week, and I wonder if their readers have ever heard of a little known drummer named Vinnie Paul Abbott? Played for a little band called Pantera? From Texas? Well, I guess the mag’s got more Slipknot fans who’re subscribers.
Joey Jordison — the miniaturized kitman for Slipknot — has been named by the English magazine’s readership as “The Greatest Drummer of the Last 25 Years.” And fuck, I mean, Joey’s the man behind that kit. But Vinnie Paul is a gross omission from this list. And when you read the rest of the list, you’ll know why.
After more than 100,000 online votes, Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy was named #2 on the list of “The 20 Greatest Drummers of the Last 25 Years.” 25, people. That’s a long ass time. Then, we get thrown a curve at #3: Porcupine Tree’s Gavin Harrison. I am one of the biggest fans of that band you will ever meet, but #3? And no Vinnie?
The rest of the list includes Rush’s Neil Peart at #4, Dave Grohl from Nirvana and Them Crooked Vultures behind Neil. Travis Barker from Blink-182 comes in at #6, with Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain at #7, Vinnie Colaiuta (who played for Sting and Jeff Beck) follows at #8, with Phil Collins at #9. Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith finishes at #10.
Brann Dailor of Mastodon comes in at a well-deserved #11, while Paul Simon drummer Steve Gadd bests The Police’s Stewart Copeland, coming in at #12 and #14 respectively? A guy who played with Oasis and a dude who played with Toto are better than Vinnie Paul? What the fuck, people? What about Mike Borden from Faith No More and Ozzy Osbourne’s touring band? Jesus, you assholes are totally dumb.
