Not content to rest on his laurels reading comic books, John Dolmayan — the drummer for Grammy-winning band System of a Down — has announced a crowdfunding effort for something called These Grey Men.
The project will produce an album of covers of bands like Radiohead, Outkast and David Bowie, as well as a tour.
Dolmayan says a bunch of all-stars will be featured on the album, but will announce those names at some later date.
His main collaborator on the project is James Hazley, formerly of the band Cockeyed Ghost.
“I’m a huge music fan and have an iPod with over 10,000 or so songs on it that I listen to religiously,” boasts Dolmayan.
I wish I had an iPod with that many tunes on it. And the same amount of bank account digits as this dude.
“I often rearrange melodies in my head or think about how much fun it would’ve been to play on some of my favorite songs. That ultimately led to the idea of a covers album. As for what it’s going to sound like, it’ll definitely have a rock feel, but not limited by any genre restrictions. Listeners are going to hear a plethora of sounds and styles.”

Surely, John’s gotta have some sort of studio set up. And surely, he could self-finance this project.
But crowdfunding is just the way that it goes these days.
I wish I had the testicular fortitude to launch one myself. ‘Cause I’m broke.
