I hope you like heavy psychedelic music as much as we do here at GunShy Assassin. Featured in this installment of Under the Radar is a band that seriously rivals the greats.
If the Socks were around in the early ‘70s, we’d be listing their name along with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pentagram, and Wishbone Ash.
But no one really talks about Wishbone Ash. Maybe I should give ‘em some ink because they are one of the most criminally-underrated bands ever.
I digress. The Socks are from Lyon, France, and the quartet make some of the coolest, fattest, fuzziest, grooving-est, dual-lead-guitar-having music I’ve been exposed to as of late.
The Socks are label-mates with the puissant Lo Pan on Small Stone Records and have two EPs and a self-titled LP in the bag. That LP is going to be in heavy rotation in the coming weeks for me. Mark my words.
I have it saved to my Bandcamp wishlist right now, but I’m certainly ordering a cd soon. It’s bound to be extremely good driving music, and I have need for good driving music. I spend upwards of an hour a day commuting because I’m an adult and that’s what grown-ups do.
I know the song I’m most looking forward to blasting is “Holy Sons.” This song is like a slow, steadily growing riptide that you barely notice until it’s totally washed over you, immersing you in the melodious wall of noise. Also, the ocean you’ve been dragged into isn’t water, but LSD, the sea-weed is of the hashishian variety, and all the sea creatures can melt into lovely bright colors.
Not many bands can make you feel that way, so let the Socks know you dig ‘em.
