Last week, we brought you a story about much-revered ex-Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul and his peculiar habit of putting worthless crap on eBay and bilking fans — scrambling to own something from a heavy metal legend — out of hundreds, even thousands. He told some magazine that it was all in good fun, and in the interest of comedy. I didn’t find this particularly funny. I know Vin’s a nice guy, and insists he doesn’t need the cash, but this is just strange.
Well, thanks to the prodding of some dude he called Video Bob, Vinnie is going to put an old car and a barbecue up on eBay, according to something I read on Blabbermouth.
“Let me tell you something…If you’re anybody — not just me, but anybody — and you can put an oven that doesn’t work at all on eBay and sign your name on it and sell it for 1200 bucks and somebody will drive from Seattle to Dallas, Texas to get it, that’s pretty cool. And then I found a cell phone that was a Motorola cell phone — back in the day it was the size of a walkie-talkie.”
Both items sold on the auction site, and Vinnie and Video Bob probably keeled over from laughing so fucking much. How is this funny? Vinnie explains Video Bob’s influence: “I’ve got this dude named Video Bob that’s kind of always dreaming things up. He goes, ‘Let’s put that thing on eBay.’ I sold that thing for six hundred dollars.” That “thing” was the broken phone.
“It’s not about the money — it’s not like I can’t afford to buy my own coffin when it’s time to go, you know, but it’s about the ‘nut’ factor,” he says, calling his fans “nut(s).” “I’ve got something else I’m about to put on there, too. Well, I’ve got two things — I’ve got one barbecue grill I’m about to put on there, and it works just fine — but I’ve also got my 1993 Mitsubishi 3000 [car] I’m gonna put on there. Probably the ‘Blue Book’ [value] on it [is] 700 dollars, but I guarantee you I’m gonna get about 12 grand out of that thing.”
He also plans on selling toilets from the home he is remodeling. “I guarantee you those will probably go for $1,500 to three grand apiece. It just pays for me and Greg [Tribett]‘s drinking habits.”
Dude, this is fucking shameless. And the people who buy Vinnie’s crap are imbeciles. Again, I want to know how this is funny, and how anyone can have respect for this? Vinnie, come on…if it’s not about the cash and just for the “nut” factor, why not auction them off, and then not collect the money from the auction?
